Brief But Busy!

You may notice this newsletter is a bit briefer than usual. Rest assured, that does not reflect a lack of things going on with KUUJAN!  We've got three issue teams meeting regularly now: the Racial Justice Team, the Democracy Team and the Climate Justice Team. Starting on Thursday, February 4, you'll be able to check out news from these teams on our new website! The new website will be the same location, KUUJAN.org, but will have a lot more information and capacity for growth than the previous one. Check it out after Thursday and give us your feedback!

Redistricting and Lobbying-vs-Advocacy

Do you know the difference between advocacy and lobbying? And how much of each a congregation is allowed to engage in? And on another note, why on earth are the current Kentucky Congressional Districts shown in the map above so messed up?

Join us Wednesday, February 3, at 7pm ET (6pm CT) for an information-packed All- Networking Gathering. In the first half of our time together, the KY League of Women Voters will talk about their hopes and plans for federal and state redistricting that makes more sense and is more equitable. After that, we will hear from Rev. Rob Keithan, the author of the UUA's The Real Rules, a comprehensive document that helps congregations understand what they can and cannot do regarding lobbying and advocacy - and, sneak preview: congregations can do a lot more than you think they can!

Our All Network Gatherings are the first Wednesday of every month.  All Unitarian Universalists in Kentucky are invited to these free, online gatherings.

  • Join Kentuckians for the Commonwealth for Virtual Lobby Day! This online event will push to make voting convenient, fair, and accessible; for voting rights for people with felonies in their past; for longer polling hours, voting by mail, fair redistricting, and more. The day will start with a training all together on Zoom and we'll divide up into groups to talk virtually with our legislators about these issues, plus a virtual rally, workshops, and other events throughout the day. RSVP Here!
  • Looking for a fresh voice for Sunday mornings? Rev. Dawn Cooley, KUUJAN Coordinator, is available to speak at your congregation for a negotiated donation to KUUJAN. Email her for details.
  • Is your congregation ready to take a new step in changing white supremacy culture? Want to learn what your fellow congregations are working on, and how you might apply it at home?  Join a continent of UUs as we explore next steps in creating Beloved UU Communities at the New Day Rising Conference on February 27.
